Situated on Shelter Island, a picturesque island between the north and south forks of Long Island, only a two-hour drive from Manhattan the house is the summer home of Harriet Maxwell Macdonald, one of the designers behind the design-trio OCHRE, and husband Andrew Corrie, founder of modern and sustainable homeware brand Canvas Home.
Harriet and Andrew bought the place in 2004 with the aim to keep the original spirit of the house, which dates back to 1979 and the couple now lives there every weekend throughout the year and the whole summer with son Ivo and the twins Celia and Alastair.
The house has five bedrooms and a stunning deck, a pool, and an open space living room and kitchen area with large glass facades. The walls are all pine but with a whitish-grey wash over them – the sofas are simple linens in soft and muted colors.
With its incredible view, it is hard to believe that this place – calm and isolated – is so close to vibrant New York. The interiors are simple and ‘beachy’, featuring pieces from friends, first prototypes of OCHRE designs, and vintage treasure founds all coming together organically rather than in a schematic way.
OCHRE
OCHRE designs furniture, lighting, and accessories for the interior. Their designs place equal importance on harmonious proportions, luxurious materials, and matchless craftsmanship. OCHRE has worked on many custom projects for private residences, boutique hotels, and restaurants throughout the world. Today, OCHRE is acclaimed internationally with showrooms in London and New York and continues to grow organically whilst staying true to its considered design roots. It is the destination for those in search of discreet glamour – the hallmark of OCHRE.
Canvas Home was founded in 2008 by British designer and entrepreneur, Andrew Corrie. Andrew’s vision encompasses a duality between urban chic and a more relaxed country environment. All Canvas Home products work equally well in both settings. Many pieces in the collection were initially made to fulfill specific needs in Andrew’s own home and after they passed this initial “test” they were then developed for the Canvas Home line. This simple task has allowed us to form a very intimate design philosophy and process. Andrew’s mantra has always been: “The home is a blank canvas, let us help you paint a unique picture, reflective of the life you lead”.
