Sculptor Andreas Schmitten has completed a temporary installation extending across two floors at the renowned Schmela Haus in Düsseldorf, Germany. Vorwerk is supporting the project with the high-quality woven carpet Nandoo in different colours.
Dialogues and debates about art and culture have been taking place every Thursday evening at the Schmela Haus museum since October 2013 in the course of “Futur 3”, a new series of special events. International guests are invited to discuss topics pertaining to the museum, the city, society and art. The Düsseldorfer sculptor Andreas Schmitten completed an installation extending across two floors entitled Ein Set für das Schmela Haus. Bar und Saal (2013) (‘A set for the Schmela Haus. Bar and hall’) on the occasion of this new forum. The blend of hotel bar, variety theatre and lounge exhibiting a seductive opulence stands in explicit contrast to the aloof building architecture by Aldo van Eyck.
Nandoo, a superior carpet weave, has been brought to bear on both floors. The basement floor accommodates the stage and rows of seating for the audience. The carpeting laid here displays hues in a striking violet and contrasting light green. On the ground floor with bar, the carpet with a two-tone nuance corresponds with the eclectic installation comprised of a bar staged in red and domed ceiling in black & white stripes.
ANDREAS SCHMITTEN
The sculptor (*1980) concluded his studies at the Kunstakademie, the academy of art in Düsseldorf, in 2012. He creates spaces, installations and sculptural objects that are clearly designed yet enigmatic at the same time, works that ‘play’ with the effects resulting from exhibition display, backdrop and interior design. In doing so, fundamental significance is placed on not only viewing art but experiencing it, too.
SCHMELA HAUS
Erected by Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck in 1971 for the influential gallery-owner Alfred Schmela in the Altstadt, Düsseldorf’s old quarter, Schmela Haus has officially belonged to Kunstsammlung NRW, the art-collecting body under the auspices of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), since 2009. Conceived as one of the first edifices combining residential life and gallery, the building suggests itself as a communication-inspiring venue for dialogues, lectures, conferences, film screenings, performances and much more.
