Decorative items in the kitchen

Even though kitchen is a working space, spending time in it will be much more pleasant in case aesthetic criteria are met. The harmony of elements, materials and colours is important for the pleasant feeling. When all these are accomplished, it is the decorative items that will bring in the individuality and charm as the final impression. This is especially important in the situations when kitchen is connected with dining room.

Regardless of individual affinities, decorative items should fit your kitchen by style, dimension and material. Buying and setting decorative items that don’t have much in common with kitchen’s style can give bad final impression of the space, overcrowdedness and disharmony. In order to avoid these situations, it is important to follow a couple of simple rules.

Choice of decorative items will primarily depend on kitchen’s style. If the kitchen is modern, minimalistic, it will require the same style of decorations. Kitchens performed in one or two colours out of same material allow play with materials. It means that in such space we can bring items made out of glass, metal or ceramics. It is important to find a connection to material or colour of the kitchen and apply it only in details. If the kitchen has metal handles and we use metal decorative items, then they have to be the same.

In case we have frosted or transparent glass in kitchen, then the detail made out of same kind of glass is desirable. If it’s about a ceramic item, it should be in a colour that is less present in the kitchen. Since the majority of kitchens are of rectangular shape and sharp edges, it is advisable to use the items of oval shape. These are going to be more expressive and they will create visually more pleasant impact. Using rectangular shaped items will only additionally stress out sharp kitchen lines.

In case of a modern kitchen performed in combination of several colours, it is necessary that decorative items are very simply shaped, made out of transparent glass or in one colour of the kitchen. In such kitchens, you should avoid great number of decorations, because the kitchen itself is expressive enough.

In rustic kitchens, you should use decorative items that contain natural material, such as wood, stone and plants. In these kitchens it is also desirable to make connection between colours and materials. Greenery and decorative flower-pots made out of ceramics or wood will excellently suit your kitchen. Since these kitchens are much richer in details than the minimalistic ones, you shouldn’t overdo with decor.

Kitchen island often has clear, simple lines, so it is recommended to place a decorative item that is connected with both kitchen and daily zone on it. If it is extended and has additional shelves turned towards the living room, it is recommended to decorate it with books, that is, contents that will functionally match the living room.

And to all those with small kitchens who don’t have ability to place decorative items in it, we recommend decorating one of the available walls near the kitchen with play of light and greenery, in combination of colours and materials that match the kitchen.
