LUFT: the new armchair by Walter Maria de Silva in association with Audi design

Luft. Air, flight. Fluid design. But also ergonomics and comfort. Technology and research. An armchair for relaxation, reflection.

Luft is the new armchair designed by Walter Maria de Silva, director of the Design Volkswagen Group, in association with Audi design. Rigorous interpretation and a fine balance between the top-quality craftsmanship and tradition of Poltrona Frau and the technology and innovation for which Audi design is famed.

A functional design inspired by the concept of relaxation and the desire to create an armchair that encourages informality. Pure comfort that  envelopes body and mind, relaxing the user and placing them at one with the surrounding environment.

One of the structural components of the Luft was deliberately externalised, made visible, ennobled. A sculptural element in die cast aluminium traces the profile of the armchair from the backrest down to the feet, also becoming its base. Completely seamlessly. A strong, graphical detail. To ensure the lightness of the lines and a pleasant effect whereby the seat appears to be suspended above the floor.

The armrests and seat trace a perfect, elegantly curved line, bringing to mind the wings of a bird in flight. The Pelle Frau ® leather cover accentuates its softness and comfort.

Luft is a meeting of two worlds also in terms of its processing, which brings together construction techniques from the residential world and the Luxury in Motion sector, an area in which Poltrona Frau has worked for almost 30 years and where its excellence is recognised at international level.

“Developing the Luft together with Walter de Silva and the Audi design team was a challenge that we accepted with great enthusiasm – comments Roberto Archetti, Brand Director of Poltrona Frau. It was very stimulating to see such incredible attention to detail on both a large scale and a small scale. Passion for design and for quality was the common denominator of this project, which saw the light after two years of research and experimentation”.

“The  possibility of designing for Poltrona Frau and, at the same time, using automotive world and Audi technologies was the initial attraction – explains Walter Maria de Silva. Our aim was to reconcile two apparently distant  languages, craftsmanship and extreme technology, and to get  them to dialogue with each other in perfect harmony. Luft is the product of this challenge.”
