SaloneSatellite: design, innovation + craftsmanship

Dedicated to young designers under 35 as a springboard into the world of design, the SaloneSatellite returns to the Salone del Mobile from 8th to 13th of April with a new address within the Milan Fairgrounds, Rho. As always, it is open to the general public for all six days of the Salone, and admission is free.

A new home for the SaloneSatellite, the international showcase dedicated to the design stars of the future. As of the next edition, the Satellite will be installed in Pavilions 13-15, a much more functional location – free admission access will be through Cargo 4, easily reachable from the central Porta Sud (South Gate) and Service Center, which houses the Executive, Administrative and Press Offices of the Salone del Mobile. Access for those who are already inside the fairgrounds will instead be through EuroCucina, which shares Pavilions 13-15 with the Satellite.

The new location also generates synergy with the major international exhibition of built-in appliances and high-end cooker hoods, FTK (Technology For the Kitchen), situated in nearby Pavilions 9-11. Together, the two events – which illustrate the state of the art of future creativity and built-in technology, respectively – present innovative new ideas that are also in tune with the rest of the product categories on display at the Salone del Mobile.

After the interest sparked by the last edition, a number of craftsmanship studios, equally committed to innovation, will return this year: masters of textiles, ceramics, leather and 3D printing (digital craftsmanship) will reveal through live demonstrations what lies behind the objects they make, bringing the visitor into direct contact not only with those who design them, but with who builds them. This initiative responds to the ever growing demand  from today’s young designers to integrate the artisanal tradition with the new possibilities offered by modern design and industrial production.

After a rigorous selection by an illustrious Selection Committee composed of key figures like Giovanni Anzani, Varenna (EuroCucina); Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, President Museo del Design, Triennale di Milano; Ana Dominguez, Journalist Abc – Diseño Interior (Spain); Francesco Faccin, Designer (SaloneSatellite 2007 and 2010); Daniela Fantini, Fratelli Fantini (International Bathroom Exhibition); Lia Ferrari, Journalist Io Donna (Italy); Beppe Finessi, Design Critic; Gilles Massè, Central Home Collections Director, la Rinascente; Roberto Palomba, Architect; Marcello Pepori, Lema (Salone Internazionale del Mobile); Valentina Raggi, Journalist Grazia Casa (Italy) and Marva Griffin, Curator SaloneSatellite will present approximately 650 young designers, 45% of whom are returning for their second or third time.

In addition, the SaloneSatellite Award arrives at its 5th edition, to promote contact between designers under 35 and the exhibiting companies, particularly those of the biennial shows that run concurrently with the Salone del Mobile – specifically for this edition, EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition. As such, participants in the SaloneSatellite will be asked to present, in addition to their prototypes, one or more projects belonging to these product categories.

A Jury formed by illustrious figures in the world of design and manufacturing will choose the 3 best projects in the represented categories. The 3 prizes will consist of a cash award. Winners will also be provided with consulting and press office services, with the aim of ensuring maximum visibility of the winning designs.

Once again, as in 2013, SaloneSatellite renews the collaboration with la Rinascente, the Milanese department store which will select, display and sell at the Design Supermarket in Piazza Duomo, from September to Christmas 2014, products designed by young designers participating to SaloneSatellite 2014.
